Hazing has been responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of deaths over the decades, and even over the centuries. Social clubs, sports groups, fraternities, and sororities have participated in this dangerous activity and are the reason the NMB Foundation exists. The NMB Foundation provides education to people who need to learn about the dangers of hazing.

The Telltale Signs of Hazing

While it is sometimes impossible to know if a friend or family member has been hazed, there are some signs to look for.

According to the NMB Foundation signs of Hazing Include:

  • A sudden change in attitude or behavior after becoming a member of a group
  • Wanting to leave the team or the organization without an explanation
  • A sudden lack of communication with family and friends
  • Psychological and physical exhaustion
  • Unexplained illness or injuries
  • Unexplained loss of weight
  • Abnormal eating and sleeping habits
  • Withdrawal from activities
  • Unwillingness to share details of the group or organization
  • Feelings of sadness and worthlessness

Reporting Hazing to the Authorities

If you notice any of the above signs, it’s important that you talk to the person who you believe is being hazed. If you still don’t get anywhere, you’ll need to talk to the people in charge of the group.

Talk to the advisor or coach and request a confidential discussion before a full on investigation is launched. Unless the person involved comes forward with a complaint, the name will most likely not be mentioned.

Not All Groups Participate

While thousands and thousands of people become involved in organizations all over the world, it’s important to note that most are enjoyable. Groups give people the opportunity to make new friends, practice skills, and enjoy social outings and much more. However, because some organizations participate in behaviors, such as hazing, education is the key.
